Love Triangle

Hello followers,
I recently found this portrait on another Tudor history blog I read. The art shows the love traingle between Anne, Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. It definitely portrays Catherine and old and unhappy while Anne is young and haughty. What do you think of Henry's expression?

  1. Was Henry already that fat? I thought he got really obese after the death of Anne? Also why is Anne's hair reddish brown? I thought it was Black?

  2. Hi Alicia! Great point, at the point that Anne and Catherine were both alive Henry was not this overweight. His weight gain began particularly after his 1536 jousting accident. I think that the artist probably used this rendition of Henry (looking much like he did in 1541-3) was to make him recognizable. Also, it is fairly unknown the exact details of Anne's appearance because of varying descriptions but it is possible that she was auburn haired. I am actually thinking of writing a post strictly devoted to the differences in Anne's appearance.
